Race and competitiveness

What is the UBA'S main objective and why? Do you thank black bowlers are as competitive as white bowlers. Do you think they get overlooked more times over? I know bowler with 230 averages over the years over 30 three hundred games but do you think they can be competitive on PBA lane condition?

  • its not that we r not competitive, even if we had the time, we cant get the lane pattern to practice on, that the key we need the paterns to practice on
    • also the pba has no money in it you have to bowl alot of games to win decent money, the money is being a professional amatuer
  • I think all of you have hit it on the head. As for me being a white bowler it is just as hard to be competitive upon the settings which you are discussing. You are only as good as to whom you are bowling next to. Since, I have joined the U.B.A. I have bowled against probably (most likely) the best bowlers I have ever bowled against, thus, taking my game to the next level. I look forward to having the Bounty Hunters/Woodside/Queens Chapter bring those bowlers of all ethnicity to the U.B.A. and to be STR8BOWLIN!!!! I look forward to meeting everyone on the lanes!
  • I've seen almost the worst of the worst bowling in Richmond, VA. Everyone and thier mother can avg. 230 in league so the integrity is officially gone. Most black bowlers have been sucked into league by the scores and easy pot money. What other place can a black bowler make $1000 a week with decent scores and have everyone love them for it? I've bowled a few tour stops and feel a lot better about myself competing with the best bowlers in the world than any 300 game i've bowled in league. Most black bowlers I know are just scared and put the PBA guys down in order to make themselves feel good.
    • Ryan ... good post! You mention "most black bowlers you know are scared and put PBA guys down...." for the most part, it's not only bowling but in any arena. More so amongst ourselves which unfortunately is more degrading!!! Blame it on ignorance. If one truly understood, they would be more appreciative than jealous (which is a feministic trait). If we learned not to allow others to 'define' who we are, but 'KNOW' who we are, the need for acceptance doesn't mean a damn thing!

PBAX or Sports Shot compliant league is what's happening! The most humbling yet rewarding experience!
    • i agree Collins we have very lil options also, the houses we bowl in should put down more competitive shots for practice to help the average bowler become more competitive.
  • Nah your on point VAC357. I asked this question not out of a lack of understanding yet out of a concern for our place in the bowling arena. We need to support each other and push those that shines above the majority to the next platform. Point in case, I not sure if you know Alex (forgot his last name) known to fam and friends as POP well he's about 15/16 and he's a animal with the ball I mean by far a beast of another color. He got pick to do a tournament that cost 6G's and his fam is doing a fund raiser to help him and just because we don't have capital at our disposal we miss out on alot of good opportunities. I think we should help him with our smallest donations he could have an chance to make living easier for his family doing something he loves and we love. He's a product of the bowling alley the place we all call home. NOF. UBA for life.
  • I don't think black bowlers are any less competitive than white bowlers. I believe white bowlers put in more time to excel than we do (note, I said put in more time...not more competitive). Rarely have I seen black bowlers put money towards being coached. Yet our money goes towards the next "latest and greatest" ball hoping it will deliver the honor scores we seek.

In regards to PBA conditions... they will quickly put your EGO in check! It's a humbling experience and will exploit ALL THE FLAWS in your game. Don't bowl on em if you have an inflated ego (which we are extremely guilty ;-) ). Thin line between confidence and conceit!

In general, I really think accomplished bowlers find the game less challenging (especially on a THS). Balls along with 'soft' conditions really expand the area we play the lanes. Urethane balls rarely provided the amount of recovery seen by the resin balls of today. Basically, the integrity of the game is nearly gone, hence the lack of drive to compete on the 'next' level.

Always remember ... What doesn't kill you, can only make you stronger

P.S. Sorry my brother if I steered away from your initial thought/question :)
    • WHAT YOU SAY IS SO TRUE THATS WHY I HAVE A COACH A FEW FOR THAT MATTER I WANT TO BE IN THE PBA I HAVE JUST ALITTLE WAYS TO GO TO HIT MY 200 AVERAGE I'M 195 NOW AND THEN IM GOING PRO IF ONLY TO TRY THATS MY GOAL I BOWL IN THE SPORTS LEAGUE EVERY YEAR I PRACTICE 5 OUT OF 7 DAYS IN DIFFERENT HOUSES TO GET A FEEL OF THE DIFFERENT CONDITIONS I WILL BE READY SOON LOOK OUT FOR ME
